The restoration is being executed with surgical precision under the direct supervision of the artist himself, Jorge Jiménez Deredia. The hands-on work is led by Gilberth Herrera, the country’s authorized restorer for Deredia’s sculptures. This direct oversight guarantees that the final result will align perfectly with the artist’s original vision and technical standards.
The multi-step process began with a comprehensive cleaning to remove aged waxes, surface deposits, and pollutants that had accumulated over the years. Following this initial stage, specialists carefully stripped away the old, weathered layers of patina, preparing the original bronze surface for its renewal. The reapplication of the patina is a delicate art, achieved by using a “tintasol” solution and controlled heat on the bronze to replicate the exact chromatic finish conceived by Deredia.
To ensure the authenticity and longevity of the restoration, all specialized materials were imported directly from Italy, supplied by Deredia’s studio. The final step involves applying a state-of-the-art protective system, complemented by a specialized wax designed for sculptures exposed to outdoor conditions.
After almost 30 years of exposure to the passage of time, the work requires some touch-ups to its patina as part of its natural maintenance.
