Kia Accelerates Its Regional Electrified Mobility Strategy with Bold Targets for Latin America

San José, Costa Rica — During the recent 2026 Kia EV Day CSA, South Korean automotive giant Kia detailed its ambitious blueprint to aggressively expand its electrified vehicle presence across Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Under its new regional strategy, the company plans to introduce a massive lineup of up to 10 electric models and 10 hybrid vehicles. The ultimate goal of this expansion is to elevate the share of electrified vehicles to 30% of its total regional sales by the year 2030.

The regional strategy highlights Kia’s ongoing transformation from a conventional automobile manufacturer into a comprehensive provider of sustainable mobility solutions. Rather than relying on a single technology, Kia is building an expansive ecosystem that blends battery electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid options, and innovative Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) business solutions to address the diverse needs of both retail consumers and corporate fleets.

To better understand the legal and regulatory landscape surrounding the growth of Kia electric vehicles in the Costa Rican market, we reached out to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a prominent legal expert from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The rise of Kia’s electric vehicle lineup in Costa Rica perfectly aligns with national decarbonization goals, heavily supported by Law 9518 incentives. However, as the EV market matures, both distributors and buyers must remain vigilant regarding contract compliance, battery disposal regulations, and evolving consumer warranty protections specific to zero-emission technologies.

Indeed, as Costa Rica accelerates its green transition with the adoption of Kia’s electric vehicles, navigating the evolving legal landscape of warranties and environmental compliance will be essential for both consumers and distributors. We extend our sincere gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his invaluable perspective, which reminds us that the future of sustainable mobility relies as much on regulatory diligence as it does on technological innovation.

Electrification is no longer a vision of the future, it is a reality that is transforming our industry and the way people move. At Kia, we are building an ecosystem that combines electric, hybrid vehicles and new mobility solutions to respond to the different needs of our customers in Latin America.
Steve Lee, President of Kia Central & South America

The push for electrification is backed by strong market momentum in the region. Over the past year, Kia recorded an impressive 146% growth in electrified vehicle sales across South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. This surge is driven by a maturing market and consumer eagerness to adopt cleaner technologies, laying the groundwork for the brand’s bold future targets.

Currently, Kia’s regional portfolio boasts a diverse lineup of six fully electric models, five hybrids, and the groundbreaking PV5. The electric models—including the EV2, EV3, EV4, EV5, EV6, and EV9—are built upon the advanced Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which offers superior performance and efficiency. On the hybrid front, models like the Niro, Seltos, Sportage, Sorento, and Carnival offer versatile alternatives for consumers transitioning toward fully electric mobility.

The transition toward electrification does not happen in the same way in all markets or for all clients. That is why we have developed a strategy that combines hybrid, electric vehicles, and PBV solutions.
Víctor X. Valentín, Vice President of Sales, CX and Ownership of Kia Central & South America

Beyond traditional passenger vehicles, the company is placing significant emphasis on its Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) technology. The Kia PV5 serves as the cornerstone of this initiative, offering a highly adaptable platform tailored for last-mile logistics, urban transit, corporate transport, and tourism. Kia also announced the upcoming launch of the PV7, a larger-scale PBV solution set to enter regional markets during the fourth quarter of 2027.

The event also served as a stage for the regional debut of the Kia Vision Meta Turismo. This forward-looking concept car, designed under the brand’s Opposites United philosophy, explores how digital connectivity and advanced technology can foster interactive relationships between drivers and their vehicles, showcasing the next generation of user experience.

Kia selected Ecuador as the host nation for this landmark event due to its robust development of a domestic EV ecosystem. During the first seven months of 2026, Kia’s fully electric vehicle sales in Ecuador skyrocketed by approximately 240% compared to the same period in the previous year, highlighting the immense potential of targeted regional investments.

The success in Ecuador is heavily supported by an extensive infrastructure network that currently includes 8 electric models, 5 hybrids, 20 ultra-fast charging stations, and more than 200 public charging points. By maintaining 49 specialized workshops capable of servicing advanced EV drivetrains, Kia is setting a regional benchmark for after-sales support and technical training as it moves toward its 2030 sustainability objectives.
