The state-of-the-art facility represents a $75,000 initial investment, which currently supports three direct manufacturing jobs and approximately 20 indirect jobs throughout the local agricultural supply chain. Looking ahead, AraCacao plans to expand its boutique factory tour model to Alajuela and the Central Pacific, working in close collaboration with regional cacao growers to establish new hubs of experiential tourism.
Following a market slowdown brought on by the global pandemic, cacao has experienced a strong resurgence in international commodity and specialty markets. Just as coffee has established its own prestigious cupping and barista competitions, cacao now enjoys global accolades. Since 2023, Costa Rica has consistently stood out in international arenas for the premium quality of its beans, prompting local operators to professionalize their experiences to meet the demands of discerning travelers.
To design this world-class visitor experience, AraCacao collaborated with Agami, an innovation consultancy focused on helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) target niche markets. Using creative, fast-paced workshops called “Sprints,” Agami helped structure the tour to make the complex journey of cacao production accessible, clear, and engaging for various consumer profiles.
The sprint consists of organizing ideas and information. The entrepreneur assumes multiple roles besides the one they are passionate about, which generates a lot of information that is hard to prioritize. They only have to share what they have in mind, regardless of the order, and our job is to turn it into useful tools to launch their idea. SMEs should not limit themselves, as this is a very accessible consulting service with results that can change how they view their business.

During the factory tour, visitors get to observe the roasting, peeling, grinding, refining, and tempering processes while sampling cacao nibs, pure paste, and finished chocolates. The experience also integrates AraCacao’s commitment to social and environmental sustainability. From using circular economy strategies to utilizing organic waste and supporting local initiatives like EcoHéroes, the company embeds eco-conscious practices into its daily operations.
To celebrate local heritage, AraCacao’s packaging incorporates beautiful artwork created by Costa Rican artists. In line with this cultural integration, the company is preparing to launch a special edition chocolate bar honoring the traditional Costa Rican “Mascaradas” (masquerades) made by local artisans. The factory tour runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at a cost of $15 per person, and is available in both Spanish and English.
