San José, Costa Rica — In a remarkable achievement for Costa Rican academia and scientific innovation, a multidisciplinary group of six students from Universidad Fidélitas has secured a highly coveted trip to NASA. The milestone follows their historic victory at the Reto Marte 2025 (Mars Challenge 2025) international competition. This prestigious global contest serves as a platform to highlight how young minds can contribute tangible solutions to some of humanity’s most complex aerospace and ecological challenges.
The Costa Rican delegation earned their place at the top of the podium during the final phase of the event held in Madrid, Spain. Sponsored by Virtual Educa, an organization closely associated with the Organization of American States (OAS), the competition saw the Tico team face off against highly competitive representative groups from Spain, Portugal, and Puerto Rico. Ultimately, the Costa Rican proposal captured the attention of the international jury, placing the Central American nation at the forefront of space-related innovation.

At the heart of their victory is Sibú, an automated bioreactor meticulously designed to leverage the natural properties of microalgae. The primary function of this system is to transform carbon dioxide into breathable oxygen. While originally conceptualized as a critical life-support mechanism for extreme environments like Mars and future deep-space exploration missions, the bioreactor also holds immense promise for terrestrial sustainability applications, offering new paths to combat greenhouse gas emissions on Earth.
What makes this success story even more compelling is the diverse, multidisciplinary composition of the team. Prior to entering the competition, the members did not know each other, coming from entirely different academic disciplines. The squad combined the technical expertise of Brandon Ugalde Rivera (Industrial Engineering), Emanuel Jiménez Navarrete (Electromechanical Engineering), Ghazeel Morales Mora (Mechatronics Engineering), Yair Navarro Salmerón (Computer Systems Engineering), and Andrea Alfaro Solís, alongside the critical behavioral insights of Endry Rosales Boniche (Psychology). This cross-disciplinary approach allowed them to design both a technically sound and highly functional prototype.
This opportunity provided by the university is invaluable. We are extremely excited to live an experience that very few can access. We are definitely convinced that this enriches the education we are receiving and plants new questions in us to continue thinking about research and innovation.
Brandon Ugalde Rivera, Student Representative
The institutional backing of Universidad Fidélitas proved crucial during the project’s rigorous development process. Over a grueling six-month period, the academic staff and expert mentors guided the students, pushing them to integrate hard technical skills with vital soft skills, such as critical thinking, collaboration, and public speaking. This balanced preparation allowed them to effectively defend their invention before a demanding panel of international judges in Madrid.
This triumph reaffirms the talent of our youth and what happens when education turns into inspiration and the STEM methodology becomes the challenge of putting theory into practice by learning by doing. Behind every breakthrough, there is discipline, passion, and a shared dream. Now, our students have the opportunity to take that learning all the way to NASA and demonstrate that Costa Rica can also propose solutions for global challenges.
Emilia Gazel Leitón, Rector of Universidad Fidélitas
Looking forward, the upcoming journey to NASA represents much more than a celebratory reward. It offers these six Costa Rican pioneers direct access to the world’s leading space exploration agency, allowing them to engage with world-class researchers and witness cutting-edge science in action. This hands-on exposure is poised to redefine their future academic and professional careers, highlighting the power of STEM education in Latin America and proving that local solutions can resonate on a planetary scale.
