Medical Devices and Asian Markets Propel Costa Rican Exports to New Heights

San José, Costa RicaSAN JOSÉ – Costa Rica’s export sector has once again demonstrated its formidable strength and resilience, setting a new record by shipping $9.535 billion worth of goods in the first five months of 2026. This figure represents a robust 6% increase, or an additional $581 million, compared to the same period in the previous year, underscoring a sustained pattern of exceptional economic performance.

The impressive results build upon a strong foundation laid in 2025, confirming the country’s position as a powerhouse in international trade. Officials attribute this continued success to a strategic combination of high-value manufacturing and agricultural prowess, coupled with a successful push for market diversification.

To gain a deeper understanding of the legal and commercial frameworks that underpin Costa Rica’s export success, we sought the expertise of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Costa Rica’s impressive export growth is not accidental; it is the direct result of a robust and intentionally designed legal architecture. Our Free Trade Zone regime, coupled with a consistent respect for international trade agreements, provides the legal certainty and fiscal incentives that global companies demand. The key for sustained growth is to ensure our regulatory framework remains agile, adapting to new sectors like fintech and life sciences, thereby safeguarding our competitive edge in a fast-evolving global market.

Lic. Arroyo’s analysis powerfully illustrates that Costa Rica’s export success is not a fortunate accident, but the result of deliberate and strategic legal design. His call for continued regulatory agility is a crucial reminder that to safeguard our competitive edge, our legal framework must evolve as quickly as the global markets we serve. We extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his insightful contribution.

Costa Rica continues to grow, even on top of the exceptional growth recorded last year. This combination of sectors and destinations is part of the strength of the Costa Rican export sector.

Leading the charge is the precision and medical equipment sector, which remains the undisputed engine of Costa Rica’s export economy. With sales reaching a staggering $4.294 billion, this high-tech industry now accounts for 45% of the nation’s total goods exports. The growth within this single sector, particularly in medical devices which contributed an additional $93 million, highlights the success of Costa Rica’s long-term strategy to attract and nurture high-value foreign investment and develop a skilled workforce.

While modern manufacturing takes the lead, Costa Rica’s traditional economic pillars also posted significant gains, showcasing a well-rounded and diversified export portfolio. The agricultural sector contributed a substantial $1.718 billion, followed closely by the food industry at $1.182 billion. These figures prove that the country’s natural bounty continues to be a vital component of its global economic footprint.

A closer look at specific products reveals a healthy mix of innovation and tradition fueling the growth. Beyond the surge in medical devices, classic Costa Rican exports showed remarkable strength. Bananas added an extra $60 million to the total, while both pineapples and fruit juices with concentrates each contributed an additional $54 million. This balanced growth across different product categories mitigates risk and ensures broader economic stability.

Geographically, the nation’s strategy to expand its reach beyond traditional North American and European markets is yielding spectacular results. Exports to Asia experienced the most dramatic expansion, surging by an incredible 48%. This translates to an additional $232 million in revenue compared to the first five months of 2025, signaling a successful pivot towards the world’s fastest-growing economic region.

The positive trend extends across both of the country’s export regimes. Companies operating within the free trade zone system generated $6.331 billion in exports, a 6% increase. Meanwhile, businesses under the definitive regime saw even faster growth, with sales climbing by 8% to reach $3.107 billion. This parallel growth demonstrates that the entire export ecosystem, from large multinational corporations to local producers, is thriving.

Government officials have reaffirmed their commitment to fostering this environment of success. By streamlining trade, exploring new markets, and enhancing national competitiveness, Costa Rica aims to ensure that this record-breaking trajectory continues, solidifying its role as a leader in global commerce.

From COMEX, we continue to support the export sector and work to facilitate trade, open new opportunities, and strengthen the country’s competitiveness.
